Welcome
We Can Birth exists to address the drastic rise in caesarean sections in the UK. There are two main prongs:
- Individuals and families who want physiological birth for themselves. We Can Birth exists to inform, encourage and empower you.
- Individuals, teams and organisations who unapologetically support safe physiological birth. We Can Birth exists to celebrate, encourage and connect you.
My personal experience of two "emergency" caesarean sections, followed by a VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean) at home (HBAC), opened my eyes to a multitude of reasons why people have caesarean sections, including a fear-based and litigation-avoidance system.
Pregnant people and their families are often led to believe that they can only have safe pregnancies and healthy babies with medical interventions. We sometimes don’t even know that we have more choices than are presented to us. What has been termed “the cascade of interventions” is often what causes a person to have a caesarean section, even when they originally had their heart set on a physiological birth.

In some cases, medical intervention is completely necessary. Yet, there seems to be an overwhelming amount of people being labelled as “high risk.”
One family at a time, one research piece at a time, one NHS Trust after another, we can shift the dial away from the over-medicalisation of pregnancy and birth. We can regain knowledge and trust about how and when physiological birth works best, and can be far less painful than the aftermath of a caesarean section.
This website is still in progress, but the work has started. Join me and the community at wecanbirth.substack.com.
